From facebook post... We're holed up at a rest area about 25 minutes from our race tomorrow...the first of this years long journey. Was getting set up to do a bit of writing and stuff before turning in for some sleep. I saw these people fussin' around with their bike on their trailer. I finally went over to ask them if they needed any ratchet straps. (Took a shot in the dark.) Turns out that they could use one because one of theirs broke, and their other ones were weather worn. Their bike became dangerously loose on the highway. I went back to our van to dig one out...it was in the hardest place to get to buried in the back. I just got everything out, and one of the guys came over to say that they had found another one, and were OK. I still got out one of mine, and brought it to them anyway, and said they should take it just in case. They were psyched.
Just like with Jermaine, the guy at the rest area who I tried to boost for over an hour fifteen (a tow truck came and couldn't do it either...it was an ongoing problem he was having.), there's two things that go through my head. Obviously, it's Michelle's influence on being good to each other, but the other is one thing I get asked often...
I get asked a lot what it is about the Grateful Dead that draws me so much. The first thing I say is, how much time do you have?! You see, it's so much more than the music. We were all sluggin' it out on the road together, and learned life is way cooler if we help each other out. Everything's better when everyone's gruuuuvin', maaaan! 🙂 🙂 🙂
Isn't that the goal, for everyone to be happy? Helpin' each other get there is awesome. I've had some grinding shit on the road, let alone life, so I'll help out whenever I can... A boost, a ratchet kick-down, clean a park or a beach, it's all the same...
Help each other get to that point of gruuuvin'. Shit's way cooler that way. That's the biggest lesson I took from the Grateful Dead world, that Michelle first opened my eyes to.
Everything was different after her. ❤
It felt good to have this as the kick-off to this whole triathlon journey. A nice way to start for sure.
